On March 25, forty STOP CANCER Ladies (plus one STOP CANCER Gentleman) attended a book review facilitated by Judith Palarz, who led the group in an exploration of “The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” a New York Times best-selling novel by Jamie Ford.

Set in Seattle and spanning four decades, the book is a compelling account of what happened to Japanese Americans during World War II, integrated with double themes of father/son relationships. Since the protagonist, Henry, just as the author Jamie Ford, is a Chinese American, a tale of conflicted loyalties is also woven into the story.

Following Judith’s compelling review, the guests engaged in a lively question and answer session, covering book discussion points such as characters, themes, setting and era, favorite passages, title and cover, movie potential and worth recommending to others.

We look forward to Judith leading another book review in summer.

Special thanks to Vice Presidents of Membership, Arlene Ray, Evy Lutin and Pat Gage for planning this event; Barbara and Fred Miller for hosting our group at The Wilshire; and to Rush Miller for her warm introduction of Judith Palarz.
